A very interesting proposal from the Government to transfer Housing New Zealand stock to the community sector (around 12,000 units according to Nick Smith).
As a former trustee of NGO The Housing Trust, the proposal has a lot of benefits. Community groups close to their local communities may well be able to cater to those most vulnerable in our community.
A note of caution however, there is currently not the capacity in the NGO Housing sector to manage this level of housing so that capacity would need to be built up. Also, the sel-off of assets built up the community over a long period of time needs to be looked at very carefully, once gone, it will be difficult to get them back. More debate needs to follow. WCC will be following this development closely as we develop our Housing Strategy.
