Is it safe to be a pedestrian in Wellington?

I attended a briefing today on safety on the Golden Mile with councillors today. Recent serious accidents have focused our minds on this issue. It is still rare to be hurt on this stretch of road, but the consequences of an accident when they do happen are obviously very serious. Council officers are saying they want to retain temporary barriers along the road until other measures take effect. I'm concerned about this as I don't think barriers are the answer but some of the other measures suggested are good. Things like putting street furniture (benches, bike racks) near the road should work as well as reducing the speed limit around Willis Street to 20km, public education and so on. So, we shall see if we can hopefully answer this question in the affirmative as soon as possible.
