Is a smoking ban on the Golden Mile a step too far?

Editorial from The DomPost somewhat misses the point about a proposed smoking ban along the Golden Mile.

The proposal is not about protecting the health of non-smokers but about denormalising a habit that has lethal consequences for its users.

Smoking costs all of us, irrespective of whether we are smokers or not. Whether it means losing a loved one or increased health care costs, society bears the cost.

Question is, does it work? I don't want to stigmatise smokers but we need to get rid of smoking, big tobacco are the only winners here.
