Does smart growth lead to higher prices?

Thanks to The Dominion Post for providing some balanced coverage on this crucial topic. The New Zealand Initiative's Priced Out Study lays some of the blame for high housing prices at the feet of councils around the country.

The picture is more complex when you look at regional variations. Wellington's house prices are in the middle, behind Auckland, so good news for Wellingtonians who want to buy.

Furthermore, the Council has long planned for housing growth in greenfield sites and in the CBD, a nice balance.

They have quoted me correctly on the story, pointing out that consenting fees are a tiny part of the total cost of building a house.

The debate will continue, it's good to see that this issue continues to gain coverage.
