The holy grail - predicting earthquakes

Fascinating research reported in The Washington Post which gives some scientific credibility to the idea that earthquake lights is a real phenomena.

People have reportedly observed flashes of light before and after quakes. Research has shown there is nothing mystical about this. Biomedical engineer Troy Shinbrot has shown through experiments increased electricity activity as splits appear in the ground.

If this is true (and not a very wacky story), it is exciting news. Given the obviously devastating impact that earthquakes have, any ability to predict them would potentially save hundreds of thousands of lives and billions of dollars.
