In the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes, the suggestion from academic John Chapman today that a conjoint degree for architects and engineers be offered is common sense.
We do need attractive, if not beautiful buildings but they must also be strong so for practitioners to have understanding of how to achieve both ends is a great idea. Long gone are the days where professionals specialised in a narrow area. They must be able to work across disciplines. An understanding of how business works too would be helpful.
